DSC Sailing Report 18 July 2010

On Sunday 18th July DSC completed the 6th and 7th races in its Mid Summer series. With a brisk breeze blowing down the river from Stoke Gabriel, the Officer of the day was able to set an excellent course in the eastern area of Ditsum lake.

Competitors complained that it contained far more gybe marks than usual but it produced some exciting racing for the 17 boats concerned. In the first event the wind was strong and gusty, resulting in many of the 13 Lasers suffering one or more capsizes. By the second race both the wind and gusts had moderated and most Lasers stayed upright, but it was the turn of the Solos to suffer several capsizes.

Sam Mogridge Laser, displaying his usual expertise, came first in both races taking line honours and winning position. Barrie Kenyon, Laser, was only 30 seconds behind in the first race coming 2nd and Mike Bennett and John Wynn, DY, were 3rd on Hcp with Richard Symons, Laser, 4th and Martin Ely, Laser R, 5th.

The speed with which the next race was organised took some competitors by surprise and they had a struggle to reach the starting line and had to do some catching up. Sam again led the fleet with Peter Symons, Laser, coming 2nd,Barrie 3rd and Jeremy Naylor, Laser , 4th and Mike and John 5th.

Next week the Holiday points series starts at 16.30.

DSC Sailing Report 27 June 2010

On Sunday 27th June, Dittisham Sailing Club completed the 3rd of its Mid summer series, on a beautiful summer evening with enough wind for 12 boats to sail comfortably round three circuits of the figure of 8 course.

Sam Mogridge,in his Laser, was making one of his all too few appearances and soon established a lead which no one could challenge. The Kestrel, sailed by Martin and Faye Wark was close on his heels and finished only 17 seconds behind, but once again its lower hcp relegated it to 5th position. Bevis Wright, Laser, finished next and took 2nd place and Jonathan Weeks, Solo, was 3rd on corrected time. Barrie Kenyon,Laser was 4th, and another Solo sailed by Bob Thomas was 6th.

DSC Sailing Report 20 June 2010

DSC started its Mid Summer series with two races run from a committee boat. Nine boats completed two rounds of a triangular course for the first event in which Barry Kenyon, Laser, soon established a lead which he maintained until within sight of the finishing line when he was passed by two Solos, and only kept three seconds ahead of a Wayfarer, and seven seconds ahead of a Laser Radial.

The results on Hcp were:- 1st Jonathan Weeks,Solo, 2nd Bob Thomas Solo, 3rd Bones Laser R, 4th Wayfarer Trevor Kirkin and Bob Dow, 5th Barry Kenyon.

The second race included a triangle and a sausage in each lap. Barry again took the lead and this time maintained it throughout to take 1st place, just beating Bones into 2nd place. The Solos had a more adventurous round. Richard Allen managed to get his boat up onto a plane on the final run and so gained enough seconds to take 3rd place.

Bob Thomas had to do a quick tack to avoid a collision and in the process lost his hat. A neat turnabout enabled him to recover the wayward article, but a hopeful appeal for a time allowance for having to recover Club property was regretfully disallowed (The hat had been awarded to him by the Club for his help with building the Club house). He still managed to take 4th place, beating the winner of the first race, Jonathan Weeks, who had had to perform a penalty 360 turn. The Wayfarer, although finishing with the Solos was relegated to 6th position on Hcp.

Racing next week starts at 18.00 hours.

DSC Sailing Report 25-31 May 2010

The mid-week race had an improved turn-out of nine boats, but a rather complicated course had three contenders disqualified when they failed to sail through the starting gate on one lap, whilst another retired, rather lost. Of the surviving competitors, Jonathan Weeks, Solo, was first, Bones, Laser 2nd Richard Allen Solo 3rd and Patrick Bromley Laser R 4th.
